Our Priest-in-Charge, Rev. Bruce arrived in New Bedford and started his duties on September 1st of 2020. He comes to us from St. Andrew's Gothenburg Sweden where he served as Parish chaplain and chaplain to the international students of the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers Institute of Technology. He is licensed in the Episcopal Church and the Church of England Diocese in Europe.
He grew up in Medford Massachusetts and attended public School there. He graduated from The University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1971 and The University of Edinburgh in Scotland in 1977 where he did his degree in Theology.
He was ordained to the Diaconate and to the Priesthood by the Bishops of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island in 1977 and 1978 serving in that Diocese as Priest-in-charge of the Parish of Port Hill, PEI. In 1980, he was appointed as Anglican Chaplain to the Ecumenical Chaplaincy of the University of Alberta, Edmonton Alberta.
He then returned to the USA to join the United States Navy and served as a chaplain to the USS Dale, CG-19 and the Third Fleet Service Support Group on Okinawa Japan. During this time, he concurrently served as Pastoral Associate of All Souls Church Okinawa. He was subsequently called to serve as Rector, a post he occupied until 2006.
Upon returning to the USA, he utilized his training as a Substance Abuse Counselor when he was appointed by Amistad and later Sweetser of Maine as a counselor to individuals dealing with issues of their recovery. He did this work until 2016 when he accepted the call to Sweden and later to New Bedford, Massachusetts.
When he's not here in Mass, he makes his home in Maine where he has lived on and off for many years.
