EARLY MARCH FIELD TRIP BEGINS SEASONAL EXPLORATION OF ACUSHNET SAWMILL WILDLIFE AREA
Our Tuesday (grades 2/3) and Thursday (grades 4/5) groups had two perfect days in early March
to explore the natural environment of the Acushnet Sawmill Wildlife Area. This area includes
woods, a meadow, a red maple swamp and the Acushnet River where, in the spring, you can see fish migrating upstream. These groups plan to return in late May (we hope!) to observe the changes in the environment. The children were amazed to see this ‘other world’ so close to their homes. If you would like to visit the Sawmill area with your family, the address is 32 Mill Road, New Bedford. It is just off of Tarkiln Hill Road right before the Acushnet Town Line.

Please be sure to keep social distancing during your visit. Here are some photos of their trip.

These field trips were made possible through a grant from the Community Foundation. We had access to funds to pay for the buses by virtue of our membership in the Greater New
Bedford Youth Alliance, an organization of out-of- school programs serving the greater New Bedford area.
Thank you, Community Foundation! And thank you Buzzards Bay Coalition
and the Hawes family for creating this wonderful natural resource in New Bedford!
